The parish of St Fidelis was established in 1927 by Fr. John P. O’Connell who was the parish priest at St. Margaret Mary’s. St Fidelis is a Catholic parish in the West Moreland area. Fr. O’Connell suggested a new parish because parishioners living in the west found it difficult to travel to Mass on Sunday. Mass was celebrated in the school before a church was built. The church and presbytery took ten years to build and were completed in 1936. Moreland is the only parish in Australia with St. Fidelis as its patron. The first parish priest, Father Lee, named the parish after St. Fidelis because he had been impressed by the Gospel of John about St. Thomas the apostle’s doubt that Jesus had indeed risen. St. Fidelis was the first martyr of Propaganda College where Father Lee studied.
