Hidden within the heart of Barking, St Erkenwald’s Church whispers tales of a remarkable saint. St Erkenwald, Bishop of London in the 7th century, left an enduring legacy. He was known as the “Light of London”. His influence extended far beyond the city walls. St Erkenwald, a man of royal lineage, chose a life of service. He founded two Benedictine abbeys: Chertsey Abbey for men and Barking Abbey for women. His sister, Æthelburh, served as Abbess of Barking. He was a key figure in the Christianization of Essex. St Erkenwald even contributed to King Ine of Wessex’s law code. Imagine him, advising the king, shaping the very laws of the land. St Erkenwald’s dedication to his faith and his people earned him the title of saint. He died in 693 at Barking Abbey. His remains were enshrined at Old St Paul’s Cathedral, a testament to his importance. Pilgrims flocked to his shrine, seeking miracles and blessings. The shrine, a beacon of faith, was sadly destroyed during the Reformation. Yet, the spirit of St Erkenwald lives on. Here, at St Erkenwald’s Church in Barking, his story continues to inspire. The church stands as a reminder of his devotion and the enduring power of faith. St Erkenwald, the “Light of London”, still shines brightly in Barking.
