Is it possible to find peace in a space designed for final farewells? St. Elisabeth Columbarium Church offers just that. It stands as a testament to tradition. It also embodies innovative adaptation.

St. Elisabeth Catholic Church was originally built in 1968. It resided in Bremen’s Hastedt district. In 2019 and 2020, it was carefully converted into a columbarium. This transformation reflects a growing desire. People want to be buried near a sacred space.

Imagine stepping inside. You’re surrounded by urn walls. These walls are not cold or sterile. They form three “villages”. These villages gently encircle the altar area. The altar remains almost untouched. This deliberate design preserves the church’s original purpose.

Notice the unique construction. The urn walls are built with rammed earth. Their walls are slightly slanted. Their corners are rounded. The polygonal shapes mirror the existing building’s structure. This thoughtful design creates harmony between old and new.

St. Elisabeth provides a final resting place for approximately 1,200 urns. It’s a peaceful place. The design connects people with the sacred. It honors both life and memory.

The architecture was a collaboration. Ahrens + Pörtner Architektengesellschaft mbH designed it. Lehm Ton Erde Baukunst GmbH handled the execution. Kerstin Rolfes captured its beauty in photographs.

St. Elisabeth connects to an old tradition. People want to be buried near or within a place of worship. The parish of St. John and the parish of St. Elisabeth in Hastedt were combined in 2007. They formed the provostship of St. John. Over 10,500 Catholics from over 100 nations belong to this congregation.

Consider the journey of St. Elisabeth. It started as a church. It transformed into a columbarium. It honors the past while serving the present. It’s a unique space. It blends faith, memory, and architectural innovation. St. Elisabeth stands as a place of peace in Bremen.
