The bells of St Edward’s, Romford have called worshippers to prayer since 1410. The church stands in the heart of the town, a testament to its long history and the Christian faith that has shaped Romford’s community. It was originally a small chapel, built near the river Rom, then called Mercke-dych, which became too ruinous towards the end of the 14th century. The new church was built on the same site, standing as a beacon, a symbol of hope and spiritual guidance for centuries. The current church was built in 1849-50 on top of the remains of the 15th century edifice. It has a unique blend of English Gothic architecture built using local Kentish Ragstone and finer Bath dressings.

St Edward’s saw times of upheaval, weathering the storm of history, especially during WWII. The church was badly damaged by a bomb blast, and its stained glass windows, Victorian in origin, had to be replaced. The new windows replaced some of the originals, adding a modern touch to the historic church. The grand spire stands proudly against the sky at 162 feet, making it a dominant landmark. The spire has recently undergone major repair work, and the church has been modernized with electric lighting and central heating.

Inside, the church features a grand, ornate stone reredos, with pinnacled canopies depicting the Nativity Scene and scenes of the Descent From the Cross. Flanking the reredos are figures of St Edward the Confessor and St Agnes, a beautiful sight. An original octagonal stone font from the 15th century is now preserved in the chapel. The interior is full of fascinating features, including a modern shrine to Our Lady of Walsingham, and an aubry set in a fioled arch, a symbol of the Lamb of God, in the southern porch. The bells of St Edward’s Church, Romford have called the faithful to prayer for centuries, and their sound reverberates throughout the town, a testament to the enduring power of faith. If you are in Romford, take some time to visit this remarkable church, a place of historical significance and spiritual depth.
