In 1909, their dream materialized when a small house was transformed into a church and the parish of St. Donatus was established. In 1907, before the church was even built, members of the Blue Island Society of San Donato saw a statue of San Donato of Ripacandida, while attending a mass in Altoona, Pennsylvania. They decided to commission a replica from the Chicago Statue Company. The statue was completed in 1909, and the church was dedicated to this saint, known for his healing powers and protection from evil. St. Donatus Catholic Church is a testament to the strength of faith. Through the years, its doors have welcomed generations of parishioners, nurturing a vibrant Italian-American community.
