The golden crucifix. Sixteen feet tall it dominates the high altar of St Dominic’s Church. Its magnificence is almost overwhelming.

Welcome to St Dominic’s Church in Dubrovnik a breathtaking example of Gothic architecture. This church is more than just a place of worship. It’s a living testament to Dubrovnik’s rich history and artistic heritage. Founded in 1225 by the Dominicans its current structure took shape over centuries. The initial construction began much later than its founding. Work was only completed in the 14th century. The church itself is of simple Gothic design. A hall-like structure with a pentagonal apse. Three high arched openings separate the apse from the main area. The exterior walls are bare without ornamentation. A Romanesque portal remains from an earlier structure. Bonino of Milan added a pointed Gothic arch in 1419. The church’s strategic location near the city walls made it a crucial part of Dubrovnik’s defenses.

But it’s the interior that truly captivates. The golden crucifix is a masterpiece by Paolo Veneziano. Dating from the 14th century it depicts Christ. Symbolically it features the four Evangelists in the corners. Below Christ mourn Mary and St Joseph in a distinct Byzantine-Gothic style. This stunning artwork isn’t just beautiful. It tells a story of faith and devotion. A powerful symbol of hope during difficult times.

This stunning church isn’t alone. It forms part of a larger monastery complex. This complex grew over time. The cloister with its beautiful porches was built between 1456 and 1483. Local builders worked with designs from the Florentine architect Massa di Bartolomeo. The cloister arches are closed with exquisite Gothic and Renaissance triforiums. The courtyard is an oasis of calm a beautiful green space. It provides respite from the summer heat.

The Capital Hall once hosted meetings of the monastery community. Dubrovnik architect Božito Bogdanović built it. Gothic doors lead into the hall. The floor holds around 30 gravestones dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries. Notable figures rest here including poets Dinko Ranjina and Junije Palmotić.

The vestry added in 1485 holds the remains of Paskoje Miličević the architect who also arranged Dubrovnik’s port. Near the vestry is a chapel built by Bartul Garcianus for a Syracuse merchant. Its circular window is decorated with Gothic-Renaissance features. These elements blend seamlessly forming a cohesive architectural masterpiece.

The bell towers started in the 16th century. Their construction didn’t finish until the 18th century. The entire Dominican Monastery complex is a stunning blend of architectural styles from Romanesque to Baroque. It is primarily Gothic with early Renaissance influences. It harmoniously combines various elements.

St Dominic’s Church and its monastery is a treasure trove. It holds a library with over 220 incunabulas numerous illuminated manuscripts. An extensive archive contains priceless manuscripts and documents. The museum showcases important paintings. These include works by masters like Nikola Božidarević Mihajlo Hamzić and Lovro Dobričević. A large ex-voto jewellery collection is also a sight to behold. Each piece tells a story of faith.
