A defiant finale to the Gothic Revival in Australia. That’s how one expert described St Dominic’s Church tower. Standing proudly in East Camberwell this magnificent church is more than just a building. It’s a testament to faith resilience and community.

St Dominic’s Church is a beautiful example of Gothic architecture. Built primarily of rock-faced basalt ashlar it boasts exquisite French detailing in sandstone. The stonework above the main entrance is particularly captivating. The church was not built overnight. Its story began in 1924. That year Dominican Fathers took possession of Sir John Higgins’ residence. The front section became the Priory. The first parish Mass was celebrated in the front parlour. A mere twenty-nine people attended this historic event.

Construction officially commenced much later in 1925. The Archbishop of Melbourne himself laid the foundation stone. This significant event was attended by several notable figures including bishops priests and other religious leaders. The foundation stone a gift from Mr JP O’Rourke bears an inscription commemorating the event and its significance. The inscription reads “1224 Veritas 1924 This stone of Saint Dominic’s Church-school was blessed by his Grace the Most Rev D Mannix DD Archbishop of Melbourne on Sunday 22nd June 1924.”

The church has witnessed countless lives and stories unfold within its walls. From the early days of its inception to the present it has served as a spiritual home for generations. It’s a place where people found solace celebrated milestones and mourned losses.

Many priests have served St Dominic’s. Some notably include Father Stanislaus Hogan Father Francis Xavier Corry and Father Vincent Ryan among others. Each contributed their own unique touch to the parish. The lives and contributions of these priests are woven into the fabric of the church’s history. It’s a place where history whispers through the stained glass and echoes in the hymns sung.

Today St Dominic’s continues to thrive. It’s a welcoming community of devoted Catholic Christians. This vibrant parish looks towards evangelization and justice. The enduring connection between the church and the community is evident. This speaks volumes about the lasting impact of this magnificent church.

So take a moment. Admire the towering presence of St Dominic’s Church. Reflect on its rich history and its enduring spirit. It’s a true landmark not just of Camberwell but of Melbourne itself.
