Picture the swirling snow. It’s January 12th 1977. St Chad’s Catholic Primary School in London has just opened its doors. Ten pupils. Three teachers. A brand new school building designed by Mr Jones. It stands proudly on land once occupied by Lady Edridge Grammar School. This is no ordinary school opening.
St Chad’s was born from the dreams of the clergy and parishioners of St Chad’s parish. They tirelessly fundraised for years to build this school in South Norwood. Their dedication transformed a vision into reality. The school building itself is a testament to their unwavering faith and hard work.
That first day was truly memorable. Not only did the school welcome its first students but Mass was celebrated in the school hall. Father Farmer Father Moran and Father McKenna concelebrated. As the Mass ended snow began to fall. By the time the celebratory buffet concluded the snow was so deep cars had to be pushed out of the drive. A truly memorable first day for St Chad’s.
St Chad’s Catholic Primary School became a hub for the community. It wasn’t just about academics. It was about nurturing the spirit. Building a strong sense of community. This Christian ethos is still deeply embedded within the school.
Today St Chad’s continues to thrive. It’s a testament to the vision of those who started it all. They planted a seed of faith and learning. A seed that has blossomed into a flourishing school. A school that continues to offer a stimulating and exciting environment for children. A place where everyone feels valued respected and safe. St Chad’s continues to enrich the lives of countless children in South Norwood. It remains a vital part of the London landscape. A beacon of faith education and community spirit. A special place indeed.
