What makes St Chad’s Church in Chadwell Heath so special? Well, picture yourself standing here in the late 19th century. Chadwell Heath was rapidly growing, transforming from a quiet village into a bustling hub. The community needed a spiritual home, a place for gathering and reflection. That’s how St Chad’s Church came into being.

Opening its doors on 2nd March 1886, St Chad’s began as a “chapel of ease,” a daughter church to the Dagenham Parish. The striking red-brick structure, adorned with stone dressings and a crenellated tower, stands as a testament to the community’s dedication. The clock tower, a gift from T.H. Sale of the Bengal Engineers, wasn’t part of the original design. It was added later to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee, a symbol of both faith and national pride.

St Chad’s wasn’t officially recognized as a parish in its own right until nine years later, on 25th June 1895. The Bishop of Colchester himself presided over the dedication, marking a pivotal moment in the church’s history. Today, St Chad’s continues to serve Chadwell Heath, a steadfast presence amidst the ever-evolving urban landscape. It reminds us that even as cities grow and change, the need for community and faith remains a constant.
