Beneath our feet lies a tale of healing waters and a saint from ancient Egypt. We are standing near St Catherine of Alexandria in Edinburgh. It links a Scottish queen to the sands of Alexandria. This is the story of St Catherine’s Well.

St Catherine was born in Alexandria around 287 AD. She was an early Christian who bravely spoke against the Roman Emperor Maxentius. He was persecuting Christians. Imprisoned and tortured, she converted many including the emperor’s wife. For her faith, she was beheaded becoming a martyr.

Legend says her body was taken to Mount Sinai. Monks discovered it exuded healing oils. Queen Margaret of Scotland had a phial of this oil. The story goes that some oil spilled. A spring arose where it touched the ground. That spring became St Catherine’s Well.

The well’s oily water became famous. It supposedly healed skin ailments. People traveled from Europe to seek its cure. Even Scottish kings visited. King James VI built a stone well-house to protect it. Sadly Cromwell’s army vandalized it. Restoration occurred in the late 1800s. This resulted in the structure we see today.

About a century ago, its healing reputation faded. Science revealed the oil came from shale deposits. These deposits also explained why some skin conditions improved. Tar-like substances are helpful for ailments like eczema.

Even though its medicinal use is gone the legend remains. St Catherine’s influence extends beyond the well. The Catherine of Alexandria Catholic Church bears her name. So St Catherine of Alexandria is a place where ancient Egypt meets Scotland. It links early Christian martyrdom to local lore. It’s a reminder that history often hides in unexpected places.
