Hear ye hear ye the tale of St. Cäcilia-Kirche. This church in Bonn’s Oberkassel district whispers stories of centuries past. Its oldest part a four-story Romanesque bell tower dates back to around 1200. Imagine this tower a sturdy sentinel watching over the Rhine. Originally a choir tower with an apse the apse was later removed. Today five bells hang within its walls. Two are incredibly ancient from the 15th century.

St. Cäcilia-Kirche wasn’t always as you see it today. Lightning strikes in the 19th century caused significant damage. A neo-Romanesque reconstruction began in 1863 under August Dieckhoff’s plans. The nave was built east of the old tower between 1863 and 1865. Completed in 1865 the church was consecrated on May 17 1871. The side aisles were added between 1911 and 1912 by Johann Adam Rüppel. The old Romanesque tower stands proudly in front of the newer structure. Notice the stunning stained-glass windows. They were created between 1884 and 1910. Each one a testament to the artistry of the era.

The church’s history stretches far beyond its current form. Records first mention it in 1144 incorporated into the Vilich monastery. A baptismal font from the 13th century also remains a testament to the church’s longevity. A new rectory was built in 1883. The construction of the right-bank railway directly beneath the church necessitated the demolition of the old church west of the tower. This expansion reflected the growing Catholic population of Oberkassel. The large sacristy was added in 1955.

The bells of St. Cäcilia-Kirche have their own stories. The three smaller bells form the oldest set. The largest a recast by Christian Claren from an earlier bell cast in 1826 by Georg Claren. That bell itself was a recast of an even older one. The two smallest bells from the 15th century are among the oldest surviving bells in the Bonn region. Their names Cecilia and Johannes. Two more bells cast in 1948 by Bochumer Verein hang in the tower. Their immense size required specially adapted yokes. Listen closely and you might just hear the echoes of their rich history.
