The bell tower of St Bartholomew’s Church, a local landmark, is a striking reminder of the church’s rich history and the dedication of its founders. It stands tall, crowned with a crenellated brick design, and proudly displays its name. St Bartholomew’s Church is a testament to the enduring faith of the people of Melbourne, a place where generations have come to seek solace, community, and spiritual guidance. Located at 300 Burnley Street, Richmond, the church has been a cornerstone of the community for over a century, its roots tracing back to the early days of European settlement in the area.

The first church building, a humble wooden hall, was erected in 1885 at the southeastern corner of Swan Street and Burnley Street. However, the church outgrew its humble lodgings and moved to its current location in 1925. The building was significantly damaged by tremors from the Swan Street tramway and railway line, which lay just behind the building. And the heavy industry that encroached on the neighbourhood also led to the relocation.

The decision to relocate was driven by multiple factors, including the desire for a quieter location, a larger space to accommodate community activities, and the need to move closer to the heart of the growing congregation. The new site offered a quiet haven away from the hustle and bustle of the city, while also providing ample room for the church to expand its services and outreach programs.

The bell tower is a testament to the resilience and faith of the people of St Bartholomew’s Church. Built from materials taken from the original church, it blends the styles of Arts and Crafts and early Art Deco. A set of six bells, cast by Whitechapel Bell Foundry in London and consecrated in 2014, echo throughout the area, calling believers to prayer and marking the passage of time. The bells are a constant reminder of the enduring spirit of St Bartholomew’s Church, a beacon of faith in the heart of Melbourne.
