St Barnabas Church stands proudly in Belgravia Ward. It’s just off the Pimlico Road. You can find it between Victoria Coach Station and Sloane Square. Since 1850, it has served and encouraged people from all walks of life.

Thomas Cundy Junior designed St Barnabas Church. William Butterfield assisted him. Construction took place from 1847 to 1850. This church broke new ground. St Barnabas was one of the first Ritualistic churches. It was the first in London with completely free pews. At the time, charging for pews was standard practice.

The Anglo-Catholic movement found its first true expression here. St Barnabas embodies its ideals in both architecture and liturgy. Grade I listed status protects this important building since 1958.

Look around. Three paintings reside in the crypt. Charles Edgar Buckeridge created them. Bodley designed the screen in 1906. He also designed the organ case and reredos. These details enhance the church’s beauty.

Many notable clergy members have served at St Barnabas Church. W. J. E. Bennett was a perpetual curate. Alfred Gurney served as vicar. Charles Lowder, founder of the Society of the Holy Cross, was a curate here. Their contributions shaped St Barnabas’s character.
