On a crisp spring day in 1908, the first mass was celebrated at St. Barbara-Kirche. This marked the culmination of a project begun just a year before when the cornerstone was laid. St. Barbara-Kirche wasn’t the first sacred space on this site in Bonn-Ippendorf. A predecessor chapel is mentioned in documents as early as 1738. This original chapel eventually gave way to the Barbara-Kapelle, built in 1807. This chapel still stands today, repurposed as a residence. The need for a larger, more permanent structure led to the construction of the St. Barbara-Kirche we see now. Designed in the Neo-Gothic style by architect Jakob Stumpf, the church embodies the architectural trends of the early 20th century. In 1914, a magnificent high altar, featuring a painting of the Last Supper, was added to St. Barbara-Kirche, enhancing its spiritual atmosphere. The church’s windows, especially the vibrant stained-glass windows in the choir, are the work of renowned glass artist Paul Weigmann. They bathe the interior in a kaleidoscope of colors, adding to the church’s beauty. St. Barbara-Kirche has undergone several renovations. Significant updates took place in 1962 and 1980. Further enhancements, including a redesign of the church square, began in 2024. This ensures that St. Barbara-Kirche continues to serve the community as a place of worship and architectural significance.
