Nestled amidst the expanding cityscape, St.-Augustinus-Kirche stands as a testament to Lübeck’s growth. The church emerged as the city stretched outwards, a response to the burgeoning community along Falkenhusener Weg. By the 1970s, after the establishment of Kreuzkirche, St.-Jürgen-Kapelle, and St.-Martin-Kirche, a new spiritual home was needed. St.-Augustinus-Kirche, along with a Gemeindehaus, was completed in 1972, joining the existing kindergarten that had opened its doors in 1966. The area was a mix of old and new, with two traditional farmhouses, a settlement built for the unemployed during the Weimar Republic, a post-war refugee settlement, and newer single-family homes and row houses. The Lutheran Church recognized the growing spiritual needs of this diverse community and founded St.-Augustinus-Kirche. Interestingly, St.-Augustinus-Kirche shares its architectural DNA with several other churches built in Northern Germany and Sweden during the 1960s. The design sprang from a chapel building program, resulting in a series of near-identical structures. While not unique in its design, St.-Augustinus-Kirche is unique in its place within the fabric of Lübeck. In recent times, the church has faced challenges. In late 2022, the congregation of St.-Augustinus-Kirche grappled with difficult news. Discussions began regarding the potential closure and sale of the church, alongside Kreuz-Kirche, due to declining membership and financial constraints. A meeting held in St.-Augustinus-Kirche in October 2022 saw over 120 community members gather, their emotions ranging from sadness to anger. While the future remains uncertain, St.-Augustinus-Kirche remains a symbol of community, a place where lives have intertwined, and a testament to a changing city.
