Here stands St Augustine Grahame Park. It is more than just a church. It is a symbol of community and regeneration. The story of this place is deeply entwined with the history of Grahame Park itself.

Grahame Park emerged from the old Hendon Aerodrome. After World War Two, Hendon Council needed land. They planned to replace housing destroyed during the war. Negotiations with the Air Ministry began as early as 1945.

In 1964, the Ministry of Housing and Local Government gave the green light. Hendon Council had become part of the London Borough of Barnet. Barnet worked with the Greater London Council. Together, they envisioned a new town with 6,550 homes. This new town was named Grahame Park. It honored Claude Grahame-White. He was an aviation pioneer. The first family moved in on October 23, 1971.

But where does St Augustine Grahame Park fit into all this? The church rose as the community grew. It became a focal point. It offered solace and spiritual guidance in a rapidly changing landscape.

The Grahame Park estate faced challenges. By the late 1980s, the estate underwent its first regeneration. The blocks of flats were split. Connecting walkways disappeared. Pitched roofs appeared on many buildings.

In 2003, residents voted for a full regeneration. The Housing Corporation earmarked funds for this redevelopment. Choices For Grahame Park managed the project. Countryside Properties built the new houses.

Even the name of the area evolved. In 2007, part of the redevelopment became “New Hendon Village”. This showed a desire to create a fresh identity. Despite these changes, St Augustine Grahame Park remained.

The church embraced the community’s heritage. Volunteers chose subjects to research. They displayed their work for the local community. The exhibition showcased musical performances and local delicacies. It highlighted the community’s creativity.

The regeneration of Grahame Park sought to create three neighborhoods. These neighborhoods included parks, play areas, shops and facilities. The design favored family housing in low to mid-rise buildings.

MÆ, a design firm, played a key role in the regeneration. They focused on creating a vision with community and council support. The design included tree-lined streets, parks, and public green spaces. A mixed-use hub building provided community space and health services.

Today, St Augustine Grahame Park stands as a testament. It reflects the resilience and spirit of Grahame Park. It is a place where history and community intertwine. It is a beacon of hope in a constantly evolving landscape.
