Founded in 1903 St Augustine’s Church in Hammersmith stands proudly. It’s a testament to faith and community. Initially serving London’s Irish Catholic immigrants the church grew. The Augustinian Friars from St Monica’s Church in Hoxton established it. They continue their service today.

Construction began in March 1915 during World War I. Robert Leabon Curtis designed the Romanesque revival style building. It opened on October 14 1916. The church’s location on Fulham Palace Road south of the Hammersmith Flyover is easily accessible.

The early friars founded the London Irish Welfare Bureau. It operated for years in the church’s parish center. It later became an independent charity in 1974. It eventually closed in 2013. The church has seen many changes. A new altar was added to the chapel of St Nicholas of Tolentino in 1920. The church was consecrated in 1933. A window depicting Nicholas of Tolentino was installed in 1952. This shows the enduring devotion to the saint. The stained glass windows above the main entrance depict Hammersmith Bridge. This illustrates the community’s connection to the area.

Further renovations occurred in 1960 and 1988. A new altar designed by Donald Plaskett Marshall was installed in the lady chapel in 1960. In 1988 a new altar ambo and font were added. In 2018 a refurbishment included works by Julian Stair and John Morgan. New additions include a central altar tabernacle and gilded pillars. These improvements enhance the church’s beauty and spiritual atmosphere.

St Augustine’s Church continues to thrive. It holds regular masses. These are live-streamed online. The church remains a vital part of the Hammersmith community. It provides spiritual guidance and a sense of belonging. Its history reflects the enduring spirit of faith and the ongoing commitment of the Augustinian Friars. So take a moment to reflect on the rich heritage of St Augustine’s Church. Its story is one of resilience faith and service to the community.
