St Aubyn’s School sits here in Woodford Green. It’s a co-educational school. Around 500 pupils from ages 3 to 13 attend. The school is set in eight acres of grounds near Epping Forest.

Let’s step back in time. St Aubyn’s School was founded in 1884. James Crump started it as a boys’ school. It was opposite Bancroft’s School in Woodford Wells. In 1893, the school moved to Broomhill Walk.

In 1923, St Aubyn’s School found its permanent home here on Bunces Lane. The main building was once Pyrmont Villa. It was a large private house. The school expanded into the surrounding parklands.

During the Second World War, things changed dramatically. The army took over the school. The field became an army parade ground. St Aubyn’s School temporarily moved to Cumberland.

Colonel W H Colley took over the School in 1922. His son, Mr H H Colley, joined the staff in 1951. Mr Harold Colley then became Headmaster in 1967.

A significant change occurred in 1975. The school became a registered charity. It was named St. Aubyn’s, Woodford Green, School Trust.

Mr Harold Colley retired in 1993. Mr Gordon James succeeded him. During his tenure, the school doubled in size. He also introduced girls to St Aubyn’s School in 1995.

Mr James retired in 2013. Mr Leonard Blom took over. Many new developments occurred. A new Dining Hall and Nursery building were added. The Performing Arts Centre was extended.

Mr Blom retired in 2023. Mr Louis Taylor is the current head. St Aubyn’s School has a strong commitment to the arts. The school has received the Artsmark Silver award. Students regularly participate in plays and concerts.

St Aubyn’s School also has a unique Cadet Corps. It is the only preparatory school in Great Britain with one. The cadets parade weekly. They attend an annual camp. They learn fieldcraft, navigation, and leadership skills.
