Originally a mission hall with a church above it was built in 1887. This wasn’t the grand structure we see today though. The current church began life as a far more ambitious project. In 1912 architect S D Adshead and S C Ramsey designed a church with a Latin cross plan. This design even included an elaborate dome. Construction began in 1914 with the Prince of Wales laying the foundation stone. Sadly World War One interrupted this progress. Work stopped. The grand vision was ultimately scaled back. The church we see today is a simplified version of the original plan. It was not completed until 1933.
Yet the simplicity belies a beauty. The yellow stock bricks tell a story of practicality and endurance. The plainness of the exterior however masks the light airy interior. Notice the details. The round window under the gable. The main stone entrance flanked by columns. Marvel at the carved tympanum above the door. It shows St Anselm between a lion and a lamb. The simple yet elegant design creates an atmosphere of quiet contemplation.
The interior boasts more than just simple beauty. Look up. You’ll see timber king post roof trusses. These are unusual for a building of this type. Admire the arcade capitals carved with plants and animals by A H Gerrard. Even the font is a work of art by Derrick Frith.
The murals are also captivating. They depict the Pilgrim’s Progress. Painted in 1971 by Norman Adams they add a layer of artistic depth. They are an impressive feature of this seemingly simple building. They’re a vibrant addition enriching the atmosphere of the church.
