“A church rebuilt from ashes? That must be some story.” You might be surprised by how often I hear those words standing here in front of St Anne’s Church. St Anne’s Church stands as a testament to resilience. The church we see today is not the original structure. This building, nestled in the heart of Soho, has a past as dramatic as its surroundings. The original St Anne’s Church was consecrated in 1686. It was a masterpiece designed by William Talman, a close associate of the renowned Sir Christopher Wren. St Anne’s wasn’t just an architectural gem. It quickly gained fame for its exceptional musical standards. Dr William Croft, the director of music here, composed the beloved hymn tune “St Anne”. You might know it as the melody for “O God, Our Help in Ages Past”. Now, look up at that unusual tower. That’s not the original one. Built in 1803, it replaced an earlier tower that had become unsafe. This newer tower, with its clock still wound by hand, along with the historic “Allen room”, are the only parts that survived the devastating blow of World War II. During the Blitz in 1940, St Anne’s Church was bombed and left in ruins. The image of the charred tower standing amidst the rubble served as a stark reminder of war’s destruction. For years, the site remained a car park, a void in the community. But the spirit of St Anne’s was not so easily extinguished. Thanks to the unwavering determination of the local community, St Anne’s Church was reborn in 1991. The new design, while simpler than its predecessor, possesses a unique charm. It serves as a symbol of hope, a beacon of community spirit, reminding us that even in the face of adversity, the human spirit, like this church, can rise again.
