Let’s dive into a bit of history. St. Andrew’s School’s origins trace back to the 1850s. Two local Anglican men Sim Quee and Tye Kim established a private school. It was known as Sim Quee’s School.
Reverend William T Humphreys delivered a sermon in 1856. This inspired laymen to establish the St Andrew’s Church Mission. Their goal was to reach out to the locals.
In 1861 Reverend Edward Sherman Venn arrived from England. He furthered the mission’s work. Sim Quee’s School came under the mission’s wing. On September 8 1862 St. Andrew’s Church Mission School was officially founded. Sim Quee became its first headmaster.
The school moved to Upper Hokkien Street in 1863. Cheok Loy Fatt from Hong Kong became the head. Despite financial struggles Cheok continued to run the school. It became known as Sekola Loy Fatt.
Canon J A Beckles secured government funding in 1872. The school then moved to Victoria Street. Reverend William Henry Gomes led the school from 1872 to 1902. In 1875 the school moved to Stamford Road.
Over the years St. Andrew’s Village has grown and evolved. It moved to Woodsville Estate in 1940. The school split into junior and secondary sections in 1955. St Andrew’s Junior College was established in 1978. In 1986 the secondary school relocated to the new site across the Kallang River. The junior school followed in 1996.
