Picture this a grand bluestone church standing proudly. This is St Andrew’s Uniting Church in Box Hill. It’s a place steeped in history a testament to faith resilience and community.

St Andrew’s wasn’t always here. Its story begins much earlier in 1887. A small Presbyterian congregation started meeting in a humble weatherboard building. As the community grew so did the church. A larger weatherboard structure was erected in 1911 at the corner of Whitehorse Road and Bruce Street. It was then named St Andrew’s.

However even this larger building couldn’t contain the expanding congregation. By 1932 a new brick church was planned. Fate intervened though. The Presbyterian Assembly offered them a magnificent Gothic bluestone church from West Melbourne. It was a gift a beacon of hope during the challenging times of the Great Depression.

The congregation embraced this unexpected blessing. The bluestone church was carefully dismantled in West Melbourne. It was then transported and reassembled in Box Hill. The church opened in 1935 slightly smaller than its original form. Imagine the stained glass windows the pipe organ and furnishings all making their journey from West Melbourne. This church wasn’t just relocated it was reborn.

The story doesn’t end there. In 1960 the S W Ray Centre was added to accommodate the ever-growing Sunday school. The congregation was nearly 1000 strong. St Andrew’s fostered new congregations in neighbouring suburbs. It also became a welcoming space for various ethnic communities. The Hanbit Korean congregation joined forming the Central Box Hill Parish. A second worship centre was even created from the former gymnasium reflecting the church’s ever-evolving role in the community.

St Andrew’s Uniting Church continues its mission. It is a place of worship a community hub and a living testament to the enduring power of faith. It stands as a proud symbol of the Box Hill community’s history and resilience. Its story is not just in stone and glass but in the countless lives it has touched over the years.
