Established on 8 September 1862 St Andrew’s Junior School boasts a rich history. It began as the St Andrew’s Church of England Mission School. Initially housed in a private institution on Chin Chew Street the school soon outgrew its space. A move to Upper Hokkien Street followed then to Victoria Street. The school faced financial hardship. Government aid secured its future. A significant landmark was the relocation to Stamford Road in 1875. A chapel served as both a classroom and worship center. Under headmaster J Romanis Lee the school expanded. Its status rose from second grade to top grade. It began offering the Senior Cambridge Examination. A sports tradition blossomed with boxing and rugby excelling. The school’s growth continued. It moved to the Woodsville Estate in 1940. This marked another important chapter. A new two-story building opened. World War II temporarily closed the school.
Post-war the school reopened quickly. It divided into lower and upper schools. These eventually became the Junior and Secondary Schools in 1955. Rapid growth led to a split into Junior I and Junior II schools in 1956. These later merged to form the current St Andrew’s Junior School in 1990. Noise from the Pan-Island Expressway forced another move in 1996. The school relocated to its present location in Potong Pasir. New buildings opened in December 2004. This is a testament to the school’s enduring spirit.
The school’s house system adds to its vibrant culture. Five houses Venn Hose Loy Fatt Gomes and Romanis commemorate key figures in its history. The school song Up and On reflects its motto. The school’s crest a blue shield with a silver cross keys and a tiger’s face. This represents knowledge heaven and local strength. The school’s athletic achievements are legendary. Especially in rugby and boxing. Success extends to cricket and hockey. The school’s students and alumni share a unique Saints’ spirit. This bond continues to this day. They support each other enthusiastically in sports and other activities.
