Hidden within Leipzig’s Wahren district, St. Albert Church whispers tales of resilience and resistance. St. Albert’s story isn’t just about bricks and mortar. It’s about the unwavering spirit of the Dominican order, re-establishing themselves in Leipzig after the Reformation. Their original monastery and church, located at Augustusplatz, were dissolved in 1539. The university took over the buildings. Yet, the Dominicans returned in 1931, finding a new home in Wahren. They began with a modest chapel in a residential building, dedicating it to St. Albert. St. Albert Church itself arose from the determination of Father Gordian Landwehr. He spearheaded the construction, beginning with the laying of the cornerstone in 1951. The church, designed by architect Andreas Marquart, was consecrated in 1952. The story of St. Albert deepens with the courageous acts of Superior Aurelius Arkenau during World War II. He transformed the monastery and parish house into a haven, sheltering deserters, Jews, communists, and forced laborers from the Nazi regime. He provided medical aid and forged passports, risking his own life to save others. This bravery earned him the posthumous title of “Righteous Among the Nations” from Yad Vashem in 1999. The church architecture itself tells a story. The rounded arch, a recurring motif, graces the openings of the organ gallery and the altar area, symbolizing continuity and strength. The three church bells, cast by Schilling & Lattermann, add their voices to the narrative. The latest chapter of St. Albert’s story was written in 1998 with the inauguration of a new monastery building. This expansion signifies not just physical growth, but also the continued commitment of the Dominicans to the Leipzig community. St. Albert stands today as a testament to faith, resilience, and the power of community. It’s a place where history whispers from every corner, inviting you to listen and learn.
