Seeking safety, Alban and Ursus journeyed from Greece to Naples. Finding Naples unsafe, they went to Gaul and Germany. St. Ambrose of Milan sent them to convert pagan populations.

Tragedy struck when Ursus was killed. Alban continued alone to Mainz. He preached and converted many to Catholicism. His opposition to Arianism made him famous.

The invasion of Vandals disrupted his mission. These pagan Vandals martyred Alban. He was beheaded for his faith. His body was decapitated post-mortem. This was meant to terrorize the Christian community.

St. Alban was canonized for his sacrifice. His feast day is June 21. He is often depicted holding his severed head. This symbolizes his martyrdom.

A church and monastery were built in Mainz in 804 to honor St. Alban. Charlemagne renovated it around 805. This became Saint Alban’s Abbey. It was destroyed in 1557 and never rebuilt.

Albert II, Count of Namur founded a church to St. Alban in 1047. Today, St Aubin’s Cathedral claims to hold his relics.
