Who was St. Alban of Mainz? He was a priest and martyr. His story is one of faith and sacrifice.

St. Alban lived in the 4th or 5th century. Sources about him are scarce. Historians find it difficult to piece together his life.

Born in Greece or Albania, St. Alban dedicated himself to God. He spread Christianity in Gaul and Germany. He worked with St. Ursus. They faced persecution from Arians who denied the divinity of Jesus Christ.

Seeking safety, Alban and Ursus journeyed from Greece to Naples. Finding Naples unsafe, they went to Gaul and Germany. St. Ambrose of Milan sent them to convert pagan populations.

Tragedy struck when Ursus was killed. Alban continued alone to Mainz. He preached and converted many to Catholicism. His opposition to Arianism made him famous.

The invasion of Vandals disrupted his mission. These pagan Vandals martyred Alban. He was beheaded for his faith. His body was decapitated post-mortem. This was meant to terrorize the Christian community.

St. Alban was canonized for his sacrifice. His feast day is June 21. He is often depicted holding his severed head. This symbolizes his martyrdom.

St. Alban is a patron saint against epilepsy. He is also a patron for those suffering from gravel, hernia, and kidney stones. People seek his help for these conditions.

Confusion sometimes arises between St. Alban of Mainz and St. Alban of Verulamium. Both were beheaded. Both are depicted holding their heads. Their feast days are close together.

The oldest source about St. Alban of Mainz is the Martyrologium of Rabanus Maurus around 845. Rabanus distinguished between the Mainz Alban and the English Alban. Gozwin wrote a hagiography in the 1060s or 1070s. He lamented the lack of evidence about Alban.

A church and monastery were built in Mainz in 804 to honor St. Alban. Charlemagne renovated it around 805. This became Saint Alban’s Abbey. It was destroyed in 1557 and never rebuilt.

Albert II, Count of Namur founded a church to St. Alban in 1047. Today, St Aubin’s Cathedral claims to hold his relics.

St. Alban of Mainz stands as a symbol of faith. His life shows resilience in the face of adversity. His story inspires Catholics worldwide. He is remembered for his unwavering devotion.
