Have you ever wondered about the secrets held within the walls of a church? St Agatha’s in Kingston upon Thames is more than just a place of worship. It’s a captivating story etched in stone and stained glass. St Agatha’s stands proudly on Wyndham Road a testament to faith and generosity.

This beautiful Italianate church was built in 1899. A local benefactor Louisa Curry funded its construction. She dedicated St Agatha’s to Saint Agatha of Sicily a highly venerated virgin martyr. The church’s design is attributed to the Leeds-based architect John Kelly. His vision created a structure that blends architectural grace with spiritual significance. Notice the red brick and Portland stone. They are a beautiful combination of materials.

St Agatha’s is not just architecturally stunning. It is also rich in symbolism. The fau00e7ade is loaded with Catholic imagery. This includes a statue of St Agatha herself. There’s also a carving of Christ in Glory. The words Sancta Agatha Ora Pro Nobis are carved into the stone. These words are a prayer asking Saint Agatha to pray for us. The interior is equally impressive. The church is 32 meters long and 15 meters wide. The barrel-vaulted nave and side aisles create a sense of awe. The columns and pilasters are of unfluted Portland stone with Corinthian capitals and moulded bases.

There are two beautiful stained-glass windows. One depicts St Agatha. The other shows Christ the Shepherd. Two marble plaques commemorate Louisa Curry and Bertram Woodhouse Curry. The foundation stone was laid by Bishop Bourne who later became Cardinal Bourne. The sanctuary houses a high altar. There are also chapels to the Sacred Heart and Our Lady. Our Lady’s altar features an oil painting attributed to Murillo. A modern free-standing marble altar reflects changes from Vatican II.

Attached to St Agatha’s is a cloister. It houses a disabled toilet facility. It’s also used for various functions. There’s even a fine pipe organ. It’s used for local concerts. St Agatha’s is a place of both history and ongoing life. It’s a place where the past and the present intertwine.

St Agatha’s is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a living testament to faith. It’s a story of devotion. It’s a reminder of the enduring power of belief and community. It’s a place you can feel the history in every stone. Take a moment to appreciate the beauty and the legacy of this remarkable church.
