Sri Vadapathira Kaliamman Temple

From a humble picture beneath a tree, the Sri Vadapathira Kaliamman Temple blossomed. We stand now before a testament to devotion and resilience. The Sri Vadapathira Kaliamman Temple’s story begins in the 1830s. A simple image of the goddess, placed under the shade of a tree, marked the nascent beginnings of this sacred space in Little India. The temple’s presiding deity, Sri Vadapathira Kaliamman, carries a rich history. She is believed to be an emanation of Sri Nisumbha Soodhani. The Chola kings revered her as their family deity. They sought her protection in times of war. She is sometimes called Rahukala Kaliamman or Vada Bhadra Kaliamman. This explains the temple’s name. The Sri Vadapathira Kaliamman Temple has seen significant transformations. In 1984, under Mr. SLP Mohan’s guidance, the temple underwent extensive renovations. A 48-day consecration ceremony marked the completion. Remarkably, two imposing 4.2-meter statues of Garuda and Hanuman were added to the entrance. These statues were reportedly the first of their kind in Singapore and even Asia. More recently, in 2015, the Sri Vadapathira Kaliamman Temple underwent another significant renovation. This time, the project cost $2 million. The Maha Kumbabishegam, a grand consecration ceremony, was held on December 9, 2016. New deities were enshrined. These included Jambulingeswarar (Lord Shiva), Akhilandeswari, Chandikeswarar, Navagraham, Swarnakrashna Bhairavar, Lakshmi Kuberar, Lakshmi Narasimar, Nandikeswarar, and Veerabathirar. Even within the Sri Vadapathira Kaliamman Temple, you’ll find diverse expressions of faith. A Shirdi Sai Baba mandir also resides within the temple complex. This reflects the inclusive nature of this spiritual haven. The Sri Vadapathira Kaliamman Temple’s journey mirrors the resilience and devotion of the community it serves.
