Behold the majestic Sri sanghabodhi Temple. Its towering Buddha statue dominates the Kandy skyline. This isn’t just any temple. It’s a testament to faith resilience and the enduring spirit of Buddhism in Sri Lanka.

The Sri sanghabodhi Temple stands proudly in Bahirawakanda a short distance from Kandy’s bustling city center. Its construction wasn’t without its challenges. Initially opposed by senior monks from the Sri Dalada Maligawa the temple faced significant hurdles in its early years. Ven Ampitiye Dammarama Thero a monk from the Amarapura Nikaya persevered. He secured land donated by Minister Hector Kobbekaduwa. He began building his temple in a small makeshift dwelling. He tirelessly raised funds for construction.

The dispute with the Siyam Nikaya monks however didn’t end easily. It took the intervention of President Ranasinghe Premadasa in the 1980s to legally secure the land for Dammarama Thero. The conflict highlights the complex religious landscape of Sri Lanka and the sometimes contentious relationship between different Buddhist sects.

The culmination of this long struggle is the breathtaking Buddha statue. This magnificent statue depicts the Dhyana Mudra the posture of meditation. It stands tall at 26.83 meters one of the tallest in the country. Construction of this iconic landmark wasn’t completed until 1992. President Premadasa officially opened it on January 1 1993.

Today the Sri sanghabodhi Temple is a beloved site for locals and tourists alike. The imposing statue is visible from almost every point in Kandy. It’s a symbol of spiritual devotion and a powerful reminder of the temple’s eventful history. This journey from humble beginnings to a place of profound reverence is a captivating story in itself. As you stand here today you can feel the weight of this history. You can appreciate the unwavering dedication that brought this magnificent structure to life. The Sri sanghabodhi Temple is more than just a temple. It is a living testament to faith resilience and the enduring legacy of Buddhism.
