Sri Rambai Cannon

Can a cannon whisper secrets of fertility? Here at Fort Cornwallis, the Sri Rambai Cannon does just that. The Sri Rambai Cannon isn’t just any cannon. It’s the largest bronze gun in Malaysia, a relic of the 17th century. It’s a Dutch cannon, cast in 1603 by Jan Burgerhuis. The cannon’s journey began far from Penang. It was a gift from the Dutch East India Company to the Sultan of Johor, likely around 1605, possibly as gratitude for an alliance. This alliance helped the Dutch seize the Santa Catarina, a Portuguese ship. Then, in 1613, the Sultanate of Aceh attacked Johor. The Sri Rambai Cannon became a spoil of war, taken to Aceh. It remained there for almost two centuries. A Jawi inscription on the cannon tells of this capture. In 1795, the cannon resurfaced, gifted by Aceh to the Sultan of Selangor. It was later seized by the British in 1871 after a conflict with pirates in Selangor. Legend says the Sri Rambai Cannon was left in the shallow waters off George Town for nearly a decade. It was supposedly retrieved by a Selangor nobleman who magically commanded it to float ashore. The cannon was first displayed on the Esplanade. It was moved to Fort Cornwallis in the 1950s. Today, the Sri Rambai Cannon is more than just a historical artifact. It’s a fertility symbol. Women hoping for children often visit, adorning it with flowers. The Sri Rambai Cannon is a tangible link to a turbulent past. It whispers tales of alliances, conquests, and even magic.
