Does the scent of jasmine and incense draw you in? Sri Mariamman Temple awaits. It is Singapore’s oldest Hindu temple. Built in 1827, Sri Mariamman Temple stands as a testament to Singapore’s rich cultural heritage.
Mr. Naraina Pillai inspired the building of Sri Mariamman Temple. He was a clerk with the British East India Company in Penang. Pillai accompanied Sir Stamford Raffles on his second visit to Singapore in 1819. He established the first brick kiln and became a leader in the Indian community.
Initially, the East India Company wanted the temple on Telok Ayer Street. However, it lacked fresh water for rituals. Colonel William Farquhar allowed Pillai to use a plot near Stamford Canal in 1821. Colonial town planning changed. The South Bridge Road site was granted to Pillai in 1823.
By 1827, a wooden and attap structure stood on South Bridge Road. Pillai installed Sinna Amman. This small deity of Sri Mariamman resides in the main sanctum today. A brick and plaster building replaced it in 1843. In 1962, a new temple structure emerged. It featured intricate sculptural works from Indian temple architecture.
The original gopuram lacked ornamentation in the late 1800s. Rebuilt in the 1930s, it was restored with sculptures in the 1960s. The Sri Mariamman Temple has undergone several redevelopments over the years.
Before 1936, no kumbabishegam consecration ceremony occurred. Subsequent ceremonies took place in 1949, 1971, 1984 and 1996. Sri Mariamman Temple served as a refuge for new immigrants during colonial times. It was a focal point for community activities. The temple also served as the Registry of Marriages for Hindus.
Theemithi is the main festival. This fire-walking ceremony occurs annually in October or November. Other festivals include Navarathiri and 1008 Sankabishegam.
Located in Chinatown, Sri Mariamman Temple is a national monument. Its gopuram has been a landmark for generations. The Sri Mariamman Temple is an agamic temple. Its style is Dravidian. The Hindu Endowments Board manages it. The Sri Mariamman Temple promotes social, cultural and educational activities.
The gopuram rises above the entrance. It features six tiers of Hindu deities and decorations. The sculptures are plaster and painted brightly. This adds to the gopuram’s visual appeal. A sculpture of Murugan is on the right. Krishna is on the left.
The main prayer hall has the central shrine of Mariamman. Shrines of Rama and Murugan flank it. Shrines to Durga, Ganesha, and Shiva surround the hall. The shrine to Draupadi is also important. The annual firewalking festival centers around her. The five Pandavas are to Draupadi’s left. Lord Krishna presides over them.
Kumbhabhishekham rejuvenates the deity every 12 years. The last one occurred on 12 February 2023. Once every 12 years, Sri Mariamman Temple is reconsecrated. The annual fire walking ceremony occurs about a week before Deepavali.
Sri Mariamman Temple stands not only as a religious site. It embodies the spirit of community, refuge, and enduring traditions.
