Founded in 1918 Sri Guru Singh Sabha stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of Singapore’s Sikh community. Its story begins not in grand opulence but in rented premises near the old Central Sikh Temple on Queen Street. Early Sikh immigrants established this important institution. They faced challenges. The initial years were marked by the use of rented spaces. This temporary situation lasted until 1932. That year marked a significant milestone. The community acquired the property at 90 Wilkie Road. Extensive renovations transformed the space. A congregational hall was created on the first floor.
The Sabha’s growth was phenomenal. In 1968 an adjoining plot of land was purchased. This paved the way for a new building. Construction started in 1978 concluding in 1980. The new Gurdwara was officially opened in 1984. A grand occasion for the community. This was not the end of the story. The old building was not demolished. It was repurposed. First as a ‘jangh ghar’ hosting wedding receptions. Later it was transformed into a Gurmat Parchar Centre. A vital space for the Sri Guru Singh Sabha Youth Wing. It provided accommodations during school holidays.
Sri Guru Singh Sabha played a crucial role in the community beyond religious services. It established Punjabi classes for Sikh children. This commitment to education is noteworthy. From 1947 to 1971 the Sabha housed the Khalsa Punjabi School. The Sabha also extended its support beyond Singapore’s borders. It organized remittances for flood relief in Punjab. It also spearheaded fundraising drives for schools colleges and gurdwaras in Punjab. The Sabha’s dedication to both local and international causes solidified its place in the heart of the community.
Sri Guru Singh Sabha continues its work. It actively promotes cohesion within the Sikh community. It supports events like Vesakhi Gurpurabs and National Day celebrations. The establishment of the Sri Guru Singh Sabha Youth Wing is a testament to this commitment. This wing fosters the appreciation of Sikh culture and heritage. The Sabha also underwent extensive renovations. A lift was added. Repairs and restorations were carried out on the old building. This ensured its continued multi-purpose usage.
