Who was Marcel Cachin you ask? Square Marcel Cachin in Paris is named after a truly fascinating figure. This square isn’t just a green space. It’s a living testament to a man who shaped French history.

Marcel Cachin was a prominent French Communist politician. He was also the editor of L’Humanité a major newspaper. His life spanned incredible changes. He witnessed the rise and fall of empires. He played a key role in the formation of the French Communist Party. He even met Lenin and Kerensky.

Imagine a young Cachin. He joined Jules Guesde’s French Workers’ Party in 1891. He later joined the SFIO the French Section of the Workers’ International. He won a seat in the Chamber of Deputies in 1914 representing the Seine. This was during World War I. Cachin initially supported the war effort. He even went on a mission to Russia in 1917. However he didn’t support the Bolsheviks. He preferred Kerensky’s provisional government.

After the war public opinion changed. Cachin’s supporters shifted left. Many sympathized with the October Revolution. In 1920 Cachin became a founder of the French Communist Party. He joined the Third International. His outspoken criticism landed him in jail in 1923. He was jailed for denouncing French occupation of the Ruhr and Morocco. Later he was removed from office in 1940 for refusing to disavow the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact. This was an alliance between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union.

Following the liberation of France Cachin returned to the National Assembly. He continued to serve until his death in 1958. He edited L’Humanité from 1918 to 1958. At 88 he became the first foreigner to receive the Order of Lenin a prestigious Soviet award. He was known as the Grandfather of the Communist Party. His granddaughter Françoise Cachin became a renowned art historian.
