Imagine Paris in the mid-19th century. Balloons were a spectacle. Now consider Square Henri Giffard. Who was Henri Giffard?

Square Henri Giffard commemorates Baptiste Jules Henri Jacques Giffard. He was a brilliant French engineer. Giffard was born in Paris in 1825. He left an indelible mark on aviation and engineering.

Giffard achieved renown for his groundbreaking invention. In 1852, he created the world’s first steerable airship. It was a dirigible. The word comes from the French ‘dirigir’ meaning ‘to steer’. This airship wasn’t just a balloon. It was a passenger-carrying marvel.

Think about it a steam engine powered this airship. It produced about 3 horsepower. That turned a large propeller. The airship stretched 43 meters. It could cruise at 5 km/h. On September 24, 1852, Giffard flew it from Paris to Trappes.

Giffard didn’t stop there. He also invented the steam injector. This device kept steam engines running smoothly. It prevented them from running out of steam.

Giffard continued his work with balloons. He famously photographed Paris from a tethered balloon in 1878. His work significantly advanced the field.

Sadly, Giffard’s life ended tragically. He suffered declining eyesight. He committed suicide in 1882 at age 57. However, his legacy lives on. His name is etched on the Eiffel Tower. It is alongside other prominent engineers and scientists.

Giffard’s contributions extended beyond airships. He also designed a suspension system for railway wagons. He preferred hydrogen for balloons. He focused on improving its production.

In 1878, he built a massive captive balloon. It could carry 40 passengers. It became a main attraction at the Paris Universal Exhibition. Passengers ascended over 500 meters.

So, as you stand here in Square Henri Giffard remember. This square commemorates a visionary. He dreamed of conquering the skies. Giffard’s inventions paved the way for modern aviation. He truly brought the dream of flight closer to reality.
