“Have you ever paused to consider the legacy of a composer honored with a Parisian square?” That’s what brings us to Square Henri Duparc. This square in the 17th arrondissement is named for Eugéne Marie Henri Fouques Duparc. He was a French composer of the late Romantic period. You can find Square Henri Duparc in the Batignolles neighborhood.

Henri Duparc, born in Paris in 1848, left an indelible mark on French music. He studied piano with César Franck. Franck was at the Jesuit College in the Vaugirard district. Duparc became one of his first composition pupils. After military service in the Franco-Prussian War, he married Ellen MacSwiney.

In 1871, Duparc joined Saint-Saëns and Romain Bussine. Together, they founded the Société Nationale de Musique. Duparc is best known for his 17 mélodies or art songs. He used texts by poets like Baudelaire, Gautier, and Goethe.

Sadly, a mental illness caused him to stop composing at age 37 in 1885. He turned to his family and drawing and painting. Increasing vision loss led to total blindness. Duparc destroyed most of his music. Fewer than 40 works remained.

In a letter to Jean Cras, Duparc wrote about destroying his incomplete opera. He said that musical representation had become repugnant. A moral transformation had obliterated his past life. Therefore, his opera Roussalka should no longer exist.

Duparc spent his later years in La Tour-de-Peilz, Switzerland. He died in Mont-de-Marsan, France, at 85. He is buried in Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris.

Square Henri Duparc, a private street, begins at Square Fernand-de-la-Tombelle. It ends as a dead end. This square stands as a tribute to Henri Duparc’s contribution to music. It links him to Claude Debussy, Emmanuel Chabrier, and Gabriel Fauré. Their squares are adjacent.

Imagine the melodies that once filled Duparc’s mind. Think of the emotions he poured into his compositions. Though his career was cut short, his influence endures. As you stand in Square Henri Duparc, remember the composer. Remember his passion and his poignant story. Let the Square Henri Duparc be more than just a location. Let it be a reminder of the power of music. Let it be a reminder of the human spirit.
