Did Gabrielle Dupond-Ebrard ever imagine a square in Lyon would bear her name? Here at Square Gabrielle Dupond-Ebrard, her legacy blossoms. This isn’t just a green space. It’s a tribute to a courageous woman. Square Gabrielle Dupond-Ebrard is tucked away in Lyon’s Point du Jour district, close to the church. It officially received its name in March 2004. However, the square itself existed for several years before. The square is a simple rectangle, bordered by the back walls of nearby garages and shrub-lined fences. The ground is packed earth, offering a natural feel. Benches invite quiet reflection under the shade of a magnificent cedar tree. Gabrielle Dupond-Ebrard was a true Lyonnaise, born here in 1893 and living until 1985. Her life was marked by extraordinary bravery. During World War II, she actively resisted the German occupation with the Combat movement. Her home on Avenue du Point du Jour, number 13, became a sanctuary for refugees. It also served as a secret headquarters for Pierre Guillain de Bénouville. He was the regional organizer for the Combat movement. Before the war, Gabrielle dedicated herself to the Guides de France and earned a degree in phytotherapy. She even founded her own laboratory. Square Gabrielle Dupond-Ebrard stands as a quiet testament to her remarkable life. It’s a place where the rustling leaves whisper stories of courage and resilience.
