Isn’t it remarkable how threads can weave history? Here at Soierie Vivante, we don’t just display silk we bring its story to life.

Soierie Vivante safeguards Lyon’s silk heritage. It is more than just a museum. It is a living testament to the city’s vibrant past. The association saves two weaving workshops that once belonged to the city. These workshops are called logis de Canuts.

Step inside and journey back to the 19th century. Imagine theCanuts buildings. These buildings housed the silk workers and their families. The architecture remains almost untouched. It offers a glimpse into their lives.

At the municipal trimmings workshop, you’ll find ornate walnut looms. These machines reveal the secrets of weaving. The genius of Jacquard’s invention comes to life before your eyes. This workshop was once owned by Henriette Létourneau. She was a skilled passementière. The city honored her with a dedicated garden in September 2023.

The municipal weaving workshop showcases the Ressicaud family’s former atelier. This is the last remaining family-run mechanical workshop. See demonstrations of both handloom Jacquard weaving and mechanical looms. The original 19th-century interior stays intact. You can even see the kitchen and attic.

Soierie Vivante actively participates in Lyon’s cultural scene. They have been part of European Heritage Days since 1995. They engage in events like Novembre des Canuts and Le Marché des Soies.

In 2018, Soierie Vivante celebrated its 25th anniversary. The association organized a retrospective exhibition. This show highlighted the workshops and its members.

The association has rescued and installed historical looms. In 2009, they saved a loom dating back to 1750. They also rescued Mr. Dumas’ woven image loom in 2008.

Soierie Vivante offers weaving sessions for children aged 7 to 12 during school holidays. There are also activities for younger children aged 4 to 6. These take place on the first Saturday of each month.

A place Georges Mattelon exists at the corner of Richan and Tour du Pin streets. Mr. Mattelon was a master weaver. He created the workshop on Richan Street. He was also recognized as a Meilleur Ouvrier de France a prestigious title for skilled artisans.

Soierie Vivante is open year-round. Visit the workshops from Tuesday to Saturday. Guided tours are available. You can watch the looms in action. The dedicated team preserves the techniques and know-how of silk production. They ensure that this vital part of Lyon’s heritage remains alive.
