Beneath our feet lies a tribute to a land far away the Square du Québec. It sits at a bustling crossroads in Paris. The Place du Québec marks the junction of Rue de Rennes Rue Bonaparte and Boulevard St Germain. This is in the heart of St Germain des Prés.

Despite its small size the Square du Québec is located at one of the busiest intersections in Paris. Inaugurated on December 15 1980 it was a joint effort. Jacques Chirac the Mayor of Paris and René Lévesque the Premier of Quebec unveiled it together.

From this square you can see iconic landmarks. The Church of St Germain des Prés is visible. Also nearby are the famous Cafés des Deux Magots and de Flore. A ten-minute walk east on Boulevard St-Germain leads to the Latin Quarter. Head west and you’ll reach the Assemblée Nationale and Pont de la Concorde. Crossing that bridge puts you at Place de la Concorde.

But the Square du Québec holds a unique surprise. It might seem like a construction site at first. Displaced bronze slabs give that impression. These are part of a sculpture fountain called L’Embâcle. The government of Quebec gifted it to Paris in 1984.

Québécois artists Gindre and Charles Daudelin created it. The fountain depicts the St Lawrence River’s powerful waters. It shows the spring thaw breaking up ice blocks. Both artists were known for integrating art into public spaces.

In 2011 the fountain was restored. This commemorated the 50th anniversary. It marked the Quebec Government Office in Paris. The Place du Québec is more than just a square. It symbolizes the bond between Paris and Quebec. It is a celebration of art culture and friendship. As you stand here consider the journey of the St Lawrence River’s ice. Imagine its powerful flow transformed into art.
