Gazing upon Square de Florette, can you sense the echoes of a king’s ambition? Square de Florette owes its existence to Louis XIV’s grand vision. He desired a majestic alignment, a straight path from the Porte d’Aix to the ancient Porte de Rôme. This royal decree, in the 18th century, set in motion the extension of Rue Rome. This extension stretched towards what we now know as Square de Florette. The land belonged to the Marquis Henri-César de Castellane-Majastre. In a gesture of remarkable generosity, he gifted the land to the city in 1774. Square de Florette thus bears his name. Not content with simply donating the land, the Marquis also financed the square’s development. This led to the installation of the first fountain and a washhouse in 1798. Later, in 1811, an obelisk graced Square de Florette. It commemorated the birth of Napoleon I’s son. This monument remained until 1911, when it was relocated to the 9th district of Mazargues. There, it stands to this day, a silent witness to history’s grand procession. So, as you stand here, in the heart of Square de Florette, remember the confluence of royal ambition, aristocratic generosity, and the flow of time that shaped this urban oasis.
