Has anyone ever wondered how Springvale got its name? Springvale, nestled 22 km southeast of Melbourne’s bustling center, owes its name to the natural springs that dotted the landscape. These springs, vital in the 1800s, provided a constant water source for livestock and travelers journeying between Melbourne and Dandenong. Springvale’s story begins long before its official establishment in the 1880s. For tens of thousands of years, the Woiwurrung and Boonwurrung people called this area home. European settlement began in the 1840s. One early resident, Christian Ludolph Johannes De Villiers, a leader of the Native Police, founded an inn called “No-Good-Damper”. This inn gained notoriety, not just for weary travelers seeking rest, but also for bushranger attacks. The name, “No-Good-Damper,” carries a dark history, referring to the settlers’ cruel practice of poisoning flour to harm the Aboriginal people displaced from their ancestral lands. By the 1850s, Matthew Bergin established the Spring Vale Hotel near a newly surveyed route, marking the intersection of today’s Princes Highway and Springvale Road. A blacksmith shop and a rest house, established by the Young Family, soon followed. While these establishments laid the foundation, Springvale’s growth truly began in 1886 with the subdivision of land near the newly built railway station. The first Springvale Post Office opened in 1864 but was later superseded by the Springvale Railway Station office, which opened in 1887. By the 1920s, Springvale boasted a lodge, a brass band, a recreation reserve, a mechanics’ institute, shops, houses, and even a picture theatre which opened in 1924. World War II saw Springvale as a blend of pastoral lands, residences, and burgeoning industries, with market gardens thriving in the surrounding areas. Sand extraction, another key industry, continued into the 1990s. The post-war era ushered in significant residential growth, marked by the construction of Rockman’s Shopwell department store in the early 1960s. The opening of the Sandown Racecourse in 1961 further cemented Springvale’s place on the map. A defining chapter in Springvale’s history began in the 1970s and 1980s with the arrival of Vietnamese refugees. Displaced by the Vietnam War, they sought refuge and built new lives in Springvale. Today, the Vietnamese community is the largest ethnic group in the area, enriching Springvale with its vibrant shops, bustling markets, and rich cultural heritage. Springvale is recognized as one of Australia’s most diverse suburbs. Springvale once held city status until a local government boundary reshuffle in 1994 saw it become part of the City of Greater Dandenong. Today, Springvale is a vibrant suburb that stands as a testament to its rich history. It offers a unique blend of past and present, from its natural springs to its multicultural tapestry.
