“A house designed to disappear into the landscape?” you might ask. That’s the intriguing concept behind Springfield Farm, a modern marvel tucked away in the green belt south of Bath. Don’t worry, it’s not actually invisible, or we’d have a hard time telling its story! Springfield Farm is a testament to the vision of its owners, Max and Diana, retired architects with a dream. They sought a home that was both a contemporary statement and a seamless part of its rural setting. The design, by Andrew Wood Associates, achieved this through clever use of materials and levels. The roofline blends with the original bungalow that once occupied the site, and a wildflower meadow flows right over the western wing. Frake hardwood cladding, limestone, and grey renders echo the surrounding village architecture. This home is all about the connection with nature. You can imagine Max and Diana, surrounded by their art collection, gazing out at the valley views through walls that seem to disappear. It’s a hidden gem, a testament to sustainable design, and a reminder that even modern architecture can find harmony with nature.
