Spreckels Mansion. A love story etched in stone and shrouded in history. Here we stand before a grand French Baroque Chateau-style mansion. It was a gift, you see, from sugar magnate Adolph B. Spreckels to his much younger wife, Alma de Bretteville. Spreckels Mansion, completed around 1913, stands as a testament to their unique relationship. Adolph, son of Claus Spreckels, the sugar king, expanded the family’s empire to Hawaii and Salinas. Alma, a daughter of Danish immigrants, rose from humble beginnings to become a renowned artists’ model. Legend says Adolph was captivated by her likeness atop the Dewey Monument in Union Square, leading to their eventual marriage. The construction of Spreckels Mansion involved combining several prime lots. Eight Victorian homes were relocated to make way for this opulent residence. The mansion cost a staggering $1,000,000 in 1913, equivalent to $34 million today. Upon its completion, six counties were visible from the mansion’s circular observatory: San Mateo, Santa Clara, Alameda, Contra Costa, and Marin, along with, of course, San Francisco itself. The views of the San Francisco Bay remain breathtaking, with Lafayette Park just across the street. After the construction, Alma journeyed to Europe, filling the 55 rooms with 18th-century antiques. It was during this trip that she encountered Auguste Rodin, bringing 13 of his bronzes back for the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition. This encounter sparked her passion for art and led to the creation of the California Palace of the Legion of Honor. Within Spreckels Mansion, Alma’s suite showcased Louis XIV furniture, while Adolph’s featured Colonial Georgian style. A grand Louis XVI ballroom completed the picture of lavish living. However, their story held a secret. Adolph suffered from syphilis, a fact Alma discovered only after their first child’s birth. To ease his sensitivity to noise during his spells, Alma persuaded the city to slow traffic on the adjacent street, a testament to their enduring bond. Following Adolph’s death in 1924, Alma inherited his vast fortune, becoming the wealthiest woman in the western United States. She continued her patronage of the arts until her passing in 1968. The mansion was later divided, then restored to a single residence by author Danielle Steel, who added the now-famous tall hedge for privacy. Spreckels Mansion. A monument to love, art, and the enduring power of a remarkable woman.
