Perched high above the Radebeul vineyards stands the Spitzhaus. It has witnessed centuries of history. Originally built in 1622, the Spitzhaus started as a modest, almost square, two-story building. It was the oldest summer house in Lößnitz. Can you imagine it during the late Renaissance period? In 1656, Dresden merchant Paul Friedrich Landsberger added a distinctive high, curved tent roof. This roof, remarkably similar to the one on the Moritzburg Castle chapel, is often attributed to master builder Wolf Caspar von Klengel. The Spitzhaus changed hands several times. In 1710, it became a royal gift. Countess Cosel presented it to Saxon Elector Augustus the Strong. Augustus the Strong, recognizing the stunning views, transformed the upper floor into a magnificent banqueting hall. It became a venue for grand courtly entertainments. The Spitzhaus attracted notable guests from all over Europe. Prussian King Frederick II, Emperor Joseph II, and even French King Charles X were captivated by the panoramic views. Unfortunately, Saxon viticulture declined in the late 19th century. This led to the Spitzhaus being auctioned off in 1889. Innkeeper Friedrich Hermann Hennicke acquired the Spitzhaus in 1898. He remodeled it and opened a restaurant in 1902. Today, the Spitzhaus continues its tradition of hospitality, welcoming visitors to enjoy its history and, of course, the breathtaking views that have drawn royalty and dignitaries for centuries. It is a testament to the enduring allure of a beautiful location and a well-told story.
