“Oh, that’s a very beautiful little church!” These were the exact words of a lady I heard as I stood before the Spital Street Methodist Church. Standing tall and proud in its place since 1884, it’s a fine example of how a small church can be incredibly efficient in its design with its castle-like exterior. The white-painted interior is adorned with art nouveau stained glass windows. Looking up, you’ll see the impressive pipe organ and balcony. This church is not just a place of worship, it’s a bustling hub of community life! Not only does it support the Rainbow Centre, a voluntary organization, but it regularly hosts a variety of activities ranging from mother and toddler groups to a brass band! If you happen to be visiting in the morning, you might just catch one of their “Take Time Together” sessions, a Christian meditation event. Be warned, however, that if you need alcohol on your outings, you might have to look elsewhere as the Spital Street Methodist Church only allows community rentals to those who do not require alcohol.
