The story begins in 1860. Fears of war spreading north from Taranaki prompted the construction of a defense system for Auckland. A blockhouse, a fortified structure designed to withstand musket fire, arose on this very spot. The location, then known as Whau Beach, offered clear views of the Manukau Heads, a potential entry point for attackers. The Whau Blockhouse also guarded the Whau Portage, a vital route used by northern Māori tribes. This made it a key defensive position.
The blockhouse, built of kauri timber and a corrugated iron roof, was more than just a military outpost. It served as a potential refuge for locals, stocked with supplies and weapons. The 14th Regiment (West Yorkshire), followed by sailors from HMS Cordelia, and later the 65th and 57th Regiments of Foot, all stood guard here. Imagine the scene: soldiers drilling, the glint of bayonets in the sun, and the constant watch over the harbor. Though ready for battle, the blockhouse never saw action. No shots fired in anger, no blood spilt.
Leased out after the war, the blockhouse met an unfortunate end, consumed by a fire accidentally started by children. The remaining structure was demolished, some of its timber repurposed for bridges in nearby Avondale. The name Whau Beach faded, replaced by Avondale South, then finally, Blockhouse Bay in 1948. The Spirit of Blockhouse Bay Installation, though not a replica of the blockhouse, evokes the spirit of this forgotten fortress. It stands as a reminder of the anxieties and preparations for a war that never reached these shores. It is a symbol of the resilience and resourcefulness of those who settled here, shaping a peaceful bay from a strategic foothold.
