Ever wonder how a simple home-based religious class evolved into the Spiral Temple of Truth we see today? It all began with Rev. Gladys P. Harrell. She felt a divine call to preach God’s truth. This led her to establish the non-denominational Spiral Temple of Truth Church on October 17, 1972.
Initially, Rev. Harrell taught religious classes and self-development courses in her own home. The Temple’s mission quickly grew. It moved to several locations within the city. First, it was at 77th and Vincennes. Next, it relocated to 2051 E. 75th Street. As the congregation expanded, the Temple shifted to 8946-48 S. Cottage Grove. It then moved to 103rd and Morgan. Finally, the Spiral Temple of Truth found its current home at 12350 S. Wallace.
The Spiral Temple of Truth grew. It expanded into various areas. These included the Spiral Bookstore, Inc. The Temple also held youth activities and established a dedicated sanctuary.
In 1980, Rev. Harrell launched the Spiral Development Institute Inc. Its purpose was to teach seekers about the indwelling of Christ. They were given opportunities to express themselves through the Bible and new thought teachings.
Rev. Harrell passed away on March 10, 1991. Spiral Temple’s motto continues to be “A People Working Together to Achieve Victories Living in Christ”. On September 22, 1991, Rev. Elizabeth Walker became Pastor of Spiral Temple. She continued to build on Rev. Harrell’s vision with her spirit-filled sermons.
Rev. Walker transitioned on May 7, 2001. Her love for teaching the gospel inspired many. On October 15, 2000, Rev. Phyllis D. Harrell became the third Pastor of Spiral Temple of Truth Church. On April 1, 2001, Rev. Beverly D. Harrell was installed as Assistant Pastor.
Membership at Spiral Temple has increased. The Temple is a blessing to many. It continues to spread the gospel worldwide. It supports missions that feed the hungry and aid the homeless.
Through trials, the Spiral Temple of Truth lives God’s word. They have faith in God and the Holy Spirit. The Temple continues to spiral ahead. Remember to keep the Pastors, members, and community of Spiral Temple of Truth Church in your prayers.
