Imagine the Speckenbüttel Park in its early days. It wasn’t always a meticulously planned park. It began as a humble woodland known as “Altes Holz”. For Lehe’s citizens the “Altes Holz” was a beloved retreat from the bustling city. As early as 1835 it served as a gathering place for the Lehe Shooting Club.
Throughout the years the park has witnessed significant transformations. In 1888 a riding ground was established. Later it was converted into a racetrack. This existed until 1919. The racetrack played a significant role during wartime. It housed a temporary airfield.
The development of Speckenbüttel Park truly took off around 1890. The Wiener garden architect Viktor Goebel designed the initial 13 hectares. The park expanded significantly over the following years.
Notable additions include the Park Gate of 1896. Lehe’s city architect Heinrich Lagershausen designed this magnificent entrance. Bernhard von Glahn a wealthy Lehe resident financed this structure. He also commissioned a Columbus monument that tragically melted down during World War I.
Further embellishments include the artificial boating lake from 1910. It offers boat rentals and in winter transforms into a delightful ice-skating rink. Speckenbüttel Park also houses the historic powder magazine from 1875. It stands as a reminder of Bremerhaven’s military past.
The park underwent a revitalization in 2001. It was rebranded as the “Gesundheitspark” or health park. This involved creating an “Alley of Healing Trees”. This highlights the park’s role in promoting well-being and connection with nature.
