The Spar- und Bauverein Lehe isn’t just a building. It is a symbol of community and hope, built between 1927 and 1929. Imagine Bremerhaven in the 1920s. The scars of war were fresh. The Spar- und Bauverein Lehe provided much-needed homes, mostly two- and three-bedroom apartments, for 122 families. The architect, Ernst Cappelmann, designed a striking structure. He chose a style known as Brick Expressionism. The Spar- und Bauverein Lehe features red and variegated brickwork, accented by triangular oriel windows. These details are particularly prominent at the building’s corners. Notice the central projection on Potsdamer Straße. The gable triangle proudly displays the year 1930. Step into the courtyard. You’ll find a single-story washhouse built in 1929. A five-story plastered building was added later, in 1967, on Batteriestraße. The Spar- und Bauverein Lehe wasn’t just about housing. It was about creating a community. This complex was one of the largest housing projects in Lehe at the time. It provided a fresh start for families struggling in the aftermath of war.
