“Belong Before You Believe” That’s the motto of Southwest Family Fellowship. See this building? It wasn’t always a church. In fact for six years this vibrant community of faith met in an unlikely location: an AMC movie theater at Barton Creek Mall. Imagine the scene Sunday service amidst the smell of popcorn and the echoes of recent blockbuster hits.

Southwest Family Fellowship began in the fall of 2003. A group of 24 people had a dream. They wanted a church that was exciting effective and innovative. Most importantly it would be a safe place. A place where the Austin community could explore their faith. They wanted a place to connect with God.

Founding Pastor Anthony Scoma and his wife Deanna knew Austin well. They recognized the southwest part of the city as a perfect location. It was rapidly growing and needed a strong faith community. After six years in the movie theater they found a permanent home. They acquired the property of a defunct church near the 290/71 “Y”.

Since then they’ve had two building projects. This demonstrates their steady growth. Reaching young families has been a high priority. They’ve created a youth-friendly atmosphere. Their children’s program is progressive and innovative. Families take spiritual journeys together. Many people joined SWFF having never been involved in a church before. A welcoming atmosphere is key to their philosophy.

Community building is a significant value here. Small groups meet in homes three times a year. Adults gather weekly throughout the city. They study the Bible. They support each other. They simply do life together. The congregation is diverse. People of all ages ethnicities socioeconomic backgrounds political beliefs and spiritual journeys find a home here. Maintaining unity is a challenge but they believe nothing should overshadow the cross of Jesus Christ.

Southwest Family Fellowship’s story is far from over. They invite you to join them to write the next chapters of their exciting journey. It’s a church where belonging comes before believing. It’s a community that embraces you exactly where you are. It’s a family waiting to welcome you. Welcome to Southwest Family Fellowship.
