Lost in the heart of Southwest Austin a beacon of faith shines. Welcome to the Southwest Church of Christ. This isn’t just a building. It’s a community. A place of healing and restoration. Southwest Church of Christ desires to be a place of healing. They believe God intentionally created you with a purpose. Sometimes the hurts of life get so loud that they begin to drown out God.
The Southwest Church of Christ began its journey on September 4, 1955. It was then known as the Ford Village church of Christ. Early members met at Jerry Joslin Elementary School. In 1961 Bert Powell and Bruce Voges were appointed elders. They guided and oversaw the church’s work.
Soon the church built its own building on Redd Street. It had seven classrooms and an auditorium. Rapid growth led to multiple building additions. By 1973 two worship services were needed. Young people met in homes nearby for classes.
The Southwest Church of Christ needed more space. A sixteen-acre plot was purchased on Manchaca Road. A 35000 square foot facility was constructed. It houses an auditorium classrooms and libraries. It also made space for the Southwest School of Bible Studies.
The Southwest Church of Christ values community. They connect people to promote unity and fellowship. They encourage integrity in all relationships. This extends to family friends and neighbors. They also value prayer and seek continuous communication with God.
The Southwest Church of Christ believes in transformed lives. They believe everyone needs God’s grace through Jesus Christ. His Spirit renews minds and transforms behaviors. This makes people more Christ-like. They strive that every man woman and child be restored in relationship to their Creator through the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The church also strives to see individuals transformed in Christlikeness as they grow in their relationship with God. They also strive to raise up people to serve in ministry both within the church and beyond.
The church operates the Southwest School of Bible Studies. It began in 1978. They produce a weekly podcast. They also publish The Southwesterner. This weekly bulletin reaches many states and foreign countries. Their monthly publication The Christian Worker began in 1986. The Southwest Church of Christ also has a Spanish congregation. It began in 1989.
Paul Diaz Jr. is the Senior Minister at Southwest Church of Christ. He joined the staff in 2008. Paul is passionate about helping people find their purpose in God. Clint joined the staff in 2017. He has a passion for building strong loving families. Jordan Smoak is the Children’s Minister. He creates fun engaging activities for kids. Chris Dobbs is the Worship Director. He blends different worship styles.
The Southwest Church of Christ continues to share the gospel. It does so in Austin and around the world. Its members are committed to the Southwest School of Bible Studies. This helps spread the gospel worldwide. The Southwest Church of Christ stands as a testament to faith. It also stands as a community and service. It welcomes all seeking spiritual growth and connection.
